While not nearly as exciting as reading about New Zealand, please take the time to read and understand our Terms & Conditions and General Information for our Small Group tours prior to making your reservation. By making the reservation and paying your deposit, you are deemed to have accepted these Terms & Conditions, including the Release & Assumption of Risk.

‘Black Sheep’, ‘we’, ‘us’ and ‘our’ refers to Black Sheep Touring Co., Ltd (NZBN 9429038752087), a registered New Zealand company.


We want to make sure your New Zealand dream is secure in these unpredictable times. We have set up a special policy that provides as much flexibility as possible for you should you book a tour, then need to postpone. If a postponement is required for any reason, including travel restrictions or a change in personal circumstances due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, we will place your funds, less any supplier fees, as a credit for a future Black Sheep tour, commencing on or before 30 June 2022. If you book then wish to cancel indefinitely, standard cancellation and refund policies will apply as set out below.

Due to the unprecedented and fluid nature of this pandemic, we reserve the right to change this special policy without prior notice.


Our tours are sold in New Zealand dollars only. Check with one of our Travel Shepherds, use an online currency converter or contact your bank for indicative pricing in your currency of choice. Final conversion rates are determined by your bank at time of payment.

Please note the following:

  • Tour prices are based on two people occupying one room. A single supplement is charged for individuals requesting or requiring a single-occupancy room.
  • All prices include a New Zealand Goods and Services Tax (GST) of 15%.
  • Prices are subject to change and/or variability up to the point of final payment due to supplier increases, GST fluctuations, market conditions and/or seasonal pricing, as is standard within the industry. With the exception of GST increases and/or conditions laid out under Section III, Alterations by Black Sheep, a tour price is guaranteed upon receipt of full payment. If a price changes prior to final payment, you may choose between accepting the change, cancelling and obtaining a refund on any money paid to Black Sheep for your tour, or accepting an alternative tour offered.
  • Any specials or reduced pricing that may become available after you have paid your deposit will not apply. If you wish to cancel your booking and rebook to take advantage of reduced pricing, full cancellation conditions apply.



Your reservation is made upon completion of your online Reservation & Deposit Form, payment of a deposit, and completion of a Travel Companions Reservation Form, if applicable. Deposit amounts are as follows:

  • Craft Spirit Tours: NZ$200 per person
  • All Other Small Group Tours: NZ$1,500 per person

If you are the person making the deposit (the Lead Traveller), you will be sent to a secure online payment site at the end of completing your Reservation Form where you will be prompted to enter your credit card details. Payment can be made via Mastercard or Visa and will be charged in New Zealand dollars. Once your online deposit has been made, you will be emailed a receipt for your payment and sent to our Travel Companions Reservation Form page, if applicable, to complete details for any fellow traveller(s). See ‘Making a Reservation on Behalf of Others’ below. Upon completion of your reservation, including all forms and the deposit, Black Sheep will follow up with a confirmed itinerary.

Note that your credit card company or bank may impose additional fees. We recommend enquiring with them about their fees prior to your online payment. Should you choose to reverse charges and charge another card after your deposit or other payment has been made, a NZ$200 administration fee will be applied.


Any person making a reservation for others shall be deemed to have accepted these Terms & Conditions on behalf of all individuals named in a reservation and it is the responsibility of the person making the booking to bring these Terms & Conditions to the attention of the traveller(s) and to advise them that their personal information will be collected, stored and used in the ways described in our Privacy Policy.


The balance of tour payment deadline is as follows:

  • Craft Spirit Tours: due no later than 30 days before the New Zealand commencement date of your tour
  • All Other Small Group Tours: due no later than 60 days before the New Zealand commencement date of your tour

If your booking is made after the above deadline, full Balance of Payment is due when submitting your Reservation Form. A Travel Shepherd will assist.

Your balance of payment can be paid in one of two ways: by Visa or Mastercard via a secure online payment site as advised above, or by making a New-Zealand-dollar bank transfer. Contact a Travel Shepherd (info@blacksheeptouring.co.nz) for details. If payment of the balance is not made on or before the due date, Black Sheep will consider your booking cancelled and your deposit will be forfeited (see below). At Black Sheep’s discretion, an extension may be given for extenuating circumstances as advised to us in writing.


We strongly advise taking out travel insurance prior to booking your trip to protect your travel investment. This should include cancellation insurance. If you cancel your trip, miss a portion of your trip, or leave a trip for any reason after it has commenced, Black Sheep is not obliged to make any refunds in full or in part, except as provided in these Terms & Conditions.

Please note the following conditions which apply to booking cancellations or alterations made by you for any reason:


  • Deposits are non-refundable. They may be transferable as provided under Alterations by the Traveller below.
  • Should you cancel your reservation more than 150 days prior to the New Zealand commencement date of your tour, your deposit may be applied as a credit to a future Black Sheep tour by the same traveller. Please note, any increases in tour pricing will apply.
  • For tour cancellations made more than 60 days before the New Zealand commencement date of your tour, all money paid, except for the deposit and any supplier cancellation fees, will be refunded.
  • For tour cancellations made 60 days or less before the New Zealand commencement date of your tour, no refund will be made.
  • If Black Sheep decides to run a trip in good faith notwithstanding any events within New Zealand (eg acts of nature, strikes or other events) and you choose to cancel your reservation, you shall be held to the cancellation policies within these Terms & Conditions.

All cancellations must be made in writing to the address at the end of the next section.


  • You may transfer your booking to another person for the same tour type and commencement date, but only if the other person satisfies all of our requirements in relation to the trip and provides us a completed Reservation Form. You must notify us in writing of the intended transfer at least 60 days prior to the commencement date of your tour. A NZ$200 transfer fee per person/per transfer will apply (in addition to any charges levied by our suppliers).
  • Any amendments to your tour made once final payment has been received and prior to tour commencement must be agreed to by us and are subject to an amendment fee of NZ$200 per change, plus any applicable supplier fees.
  • If you are unable or choose not to participate in any activity included in your tour, you must advise your guide. You can request a refund for that activity. This refund request must be done in writing by the end date of your tour. We will refund the cost of that activity, less a NZ$50 administration fee and any supplier charges or fees incurred for the cancelled activity. Note that if the activity is less than or equal to the admin fee, or if there are supplier charges or fees, no refund may be forthcoming.
  • If you wish to participate in additional activities in the course of your tour, your guide can assist where practicable in arranging these activities with payment made directly by you to the third party operator.
  • All amendment and/or refund requests must be made in writing to the address at the end of this section.

All cancellations, alterations, and/or transfer requests by a potential Black Sheep traveller must be advised to Black Sheep Touring Co. in writing to info@blacksheeptouring.co.nz. Any potential refunds will be reviewed after the scheduled end date of the tour and will be calculated and processed within 45 days of the scheduled end date of the tour.

Please note the following conditions for cancellations or changes made by Black Sheep Touring Co. to your booking:


  • Black Sheep reserves the right to cancel any tour at any time. Reasons may include but are not limited to if insufficient reservations are made for the tour (see section X. Group Size below). With the exception of the Force Majeure section below, if a tour is cancelled by us, you can transfer any amounts paid to an alternate departure date with available space within the same tour season, or receive a full refund. In the case of refund, all payments received will be refunded no later than 21 days before the scheduled commencement date of the tour if practicable. Black Sheep will not be liable to make any other payment. Travel insurance is highly recommended to cover any unforeseen circumstances that might affect your trip.
  • In the event of a Force Majeure event that occurs prior to or during a tour, such as but not limited to fire, flood, volcanic eruption, earthquake, avalanche, severe weather, power outages, labour disruptions, pandemic or other events or natural disasters outside Black Sheep’s control that hampers or negatively impacts Black Sheep’s ability to fulfill any of its contractual obligations, or if Black Sheep believes that the quality of the trip or the safety of its guests would be compromised due to such disasters or events, Black Sheep reserves the right to cancel, suspend, or truncate the tour and will be excused and released from its obligations without liability of any kind.
  • In the event of cancellation, Black Sheep is not responsible for any consequential or other loss incurred by you including but not limited to the costs of cancelled or transferred air tickets, visas, pre- or post-tour travel arrangements, or travel insurance excess. Again, travel insurance is highly recommended to cover any unforeseen circumstances that might affect your trip.


  • Before Tour Commencement: If a major change to the tour needs to be made prior to departure, we will inform you of the change as soon as is reasonably possible and will advise of any consequential price increases or decreases. A major change is defined as a reroute that requires one or more overnight stays in a different location. If a major change is made, you may choose between accepting the change, cancelling and obtaining a refund on any money paid to Black Sheep for your tour, or accepting an alternative tour offered.
  • After Tour Commencement: The nature of this type of travel requires flexibility and you should enter into it with the knowledge that you may need to allow for alternatives in route, schedule, activities, amenities, mode of transport or other changes once your tour commences. If unforeseen circumstances require a change in itinerary, Black Sheep will make every effort to ensure alternative accommodations, activities and/or other elements of your tour are of the same high quality and will keep route modifications minimal. Alternatives will be chosen at Black Sheep’s discretion.
  • If alterations result in reduced costs for your tour, these will be passed on to you. If alterations result in additional costs, these will be payable by you.
  • If an alternative activity cannot be arranged due to weather, time, or other factors, Black Sheep will refund all or a portion of the original activity, less any cancellation fees Black Sheep incurs. Note, in some cases, no refund may be forthcoming if costs have been incurred.


We strongly recommend that you and all travellers in your group obtain a travel insurance policy for the duration of your trip. Insurance can protect you financially from unforeseen circumstances such as illness, family emergencies, lost luggage, or other situations that may affect your travel plans. We strongly suggest it covers at a minimum cancellation/interruption, personal liability, and loss of luggage and personal effects. We also suggest you review your personal and health insurance to ensure that it covers the needs of you and your family whilst travelling.

If you choose not to purchase travel insurance as recommended and need to cancel your tour for any reason, under the Terms & Conditions you will not be entitled to any compensation or refund either in full or in part, except as provided for in the Terms & Conditions.


All international visitors to New Zealand require a valid passport and a departing air ticket and may require a visa for entry into the country. Please visit the New Zealand immigration website (www.immigration.govt.nz) for the latest requirements, as they may be subject to change at any time.

It is the responsibility of each traveller to ensure he or she has the appropriate travel documents for his or her nationality and meets the entry requirements. Black Sheep is not liable for any expenses or costs, nor for providing any refunds, if you are refused entry to New Zealand because you lack a valid passport, visa, or other travel documents.


International and domestic airfares are not included in the tour price, with the exception of those domestic flights included within the structure of the tour.

If you have been informed by an airline/agent of a flight schedule change, or you have a flight disruption or alteration that changes your arrival time or alters your flight number/s into and/or within New Zealand, you must advise Black Sheep immediately. Such changes may result in additional transfer, accommodation, third-party-operator and/or administration fees, for which you will be responsible. Travel insurance is advised to cover such instances.


As part of your tour package, we or one of our service providers will transfer you from and return you to the airport, provided your transfer is to or from a central city hotel or pickup/dropoff point. If it is not, we can help with alternative arrangements.


Our Small Group Tours feature soft adventures and, as such, require moderate physical fitness to fully enjoy their activities. Please inform us of any health restrictions you may have that are likely to limit your participation on the tour or could put you at risk throughout the tour. We are able to describe activities to the best of our ability and provide details on mandatory health requirements, but we are not medical experts and your suitability for a tour and/or for any activities within are wholly your responsibility. Please consult with your doctor.

By filling out a Reservation Form and sending a deposit, you are certifying that you are physically and mentally fit for our trips and do not have a physical condition or disability that would create a risk to you, our staff, or other travellers. If your condition changes prior to your tour, you must let us know prior to your arrival. We reserve the right to decline the reservations of, or to remove from or quarantine on the tour, guests who, in our opinion, may be at serious risk due to any medical conditions they may have or who may put fellow travellers at risk.

While first aid kits are carried on all tours and our guides have first aid training, they are not medical professionals and are not authorised to provide medical care or dispense medication. Any medical attention you may require while travelling with Black Sheep may be sought through a local medical facility if/when available, with any related charges at your expense.


The minimum age for participation in our Small Group Tours is 18 years. There is no upper age limit for our trips, but do keep in mind that our trips are for active travellers and participants must ensure that they are suitably fit to allow for full participation. Note that there may be height and/or weight restrictions on some activities you choose, or restrictions if you are pregnant. Your Travel Shepherd can advise.


Our Small Group trips are guaranteed to depart once they have 2 fully paid guests unless stated otherwise on a trip’s Detailed Itinerary. Note, some tours are designed to fit with other tour departures to create a longer, combined trip. In this case, individuals may be joining the flock partway through a tour up to the maximum number of guests. Your Travel Shepherd can advise how many people are on your trip prior to or at time of booking.


Our Small Group trips are run by Black Sheep guides who hold decision-making authority on tour. The decision of a Black Sheep guide is final in all matters likely to affect the well-being or safety of any traveller or staff member on tour. Failure to comply with the decision of a guide may result in a request to leave the tour. Likewise, we want to make sure our guests have the best travel experience possible; therefore, guests who, by their actions, are significantly degrading the experience of other guests, or are affecting the safety, well-being, comfort or enjoyment of any traveller or staff member, may be asked to leave the tour at the discretion of the tour guide or other Black Sheep team member. In this event, he or she may be left at any city, town, or settlement and Black Sheep and its representatives will not be liable for any expenses incurred by the traveller including without limitation the costs of lodging, meals, or transportation, nor liable to refund any portion of the tour price.


Before your tour, you will receive a range of electronic material to help prepare you for your trip. This may include information about weather, clothing, packing recommendations, New Zealand culture and customs, training suggestions (if appropriate), important dates, e-tickets (if applicable) and other important or useful information. Please read this information and keep it in a place that is easily accessible before and during your tour.

For international visitors, it is also helpful to mentally prepare yourself for the fact that you will be travelling to a country whose accommodations, facilities, and standards of living; customs and practices; living costs and prices; and/or availability of items and services may be different to your own. Experiencing, respecting, and accepting these differences, which can be both subtle and surprising, is part of the joy of travel and will help enhance your enjoyment of our culture.


Items not covered in the price of your tour include international airfares; domestic airfares outside the structure of the tour; airport transfers outside the tour schedule; travel insurance; visa and passport fees; telephone, Wi-Fi, and fax charges; laundry costs; meals in those instances specified in the itinerary; alcohol other than that purchased during meals by your tour guide; optional activities; and souvenirs and personal purchases.


We reserve the right to take photographic, video and/or audio records of any of our tours. By completing your Reservation Form and providing a deposit, you consent to the use of such material for advertising, publicity and promotional purposes.


Your privacy is important to us. If you complete a Reservation Form that includes acceptance of these Terms & Conditions, the information you provide may be shared with our suppliers to provide services. Please see our full Privacy Policy here which provides information about the personal information that Black Sheep Touring Co. collects, and the ways in which we use that information.


You acknowledge that during the tour you are taking with Black Sheep Touring Co., you may be subject to risks and dangers beyond those you would experience in your normal home and working life. Except as provided in the Consumer Guarantees Act (see below) or otherwise implied by law, you agree to assume all risks and hold Black Sheep, its agents, associates, representatives and employees free from all claims whatsoever, including loss, death, injury, or damage, arising out of entering into this agreement and/or participating in the tour. You agree that this obligation, as well as being binding on you personally, will also bind your heirs, executors, administrators, successors and assigns and all members of your family.

You also accept that this agreement and the rights and obligations under it are governed by New Zealand law. The courts of New Zealand will have exclusive jurisdiction to hear and determine all disputes arising out of this agreement and/or the tour.

In the event that any portion of this contract is determined by a court to be invalid or unenforceable, then the remaining portions of the contract shall continue to be valid and enforceable.

You acknowledge that while on your trip, your guides, Black Sheep contracted individuals, and fellow travellers may take and share photographic, video and/or audio records of your trip that may include your image, voice, or likeness. You hereby grant to Black Sheep Touring Co. a perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free licence to use, copy, publish, distribute, sublicense, broadcast and post online this material for any purpose including for promotional and/or commercial records.

Accepting these Terms & Conditions includes accepting this Release and Assumption of Risk.


We contract with a network of third-party service providers, including companies, government agencies and individuals, to assist in the running of our trips. We may also recommend external service providers that fall outside the scope of our tours in response to requests for pre-, post- or within-tour assistance. While we endeavour to only use or recommend companies that demonstrate the highest level of service, we cannot guarantee the services provided by third parties and are not liable for any acts, omissions, injury or costs that might arise, nor standards of care that are experienced, in using them. This includes any optional activities undertaken during your tour. You accept that any booking assistance provided to you by Black Sheep, including its guides and representatives, for such activities or services does not make us liable for them in any way. Likewise, should you ask us to book directly any activity, accommodation, or service of your own choosing, we cannot guarantee nor are we liable for the quality of the provider, its services, nor its facilities.


The provision of services by Black Sheep Touring Company Limited (“Black Sheep”) under this agreement is governed by New Zealand’s Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, under which certain guarantees on the part of Black Sheep are implied (for example a guarantee that the services will be carried out with reasonable care and skill) and certain remedies are provided if those guarantees are not complied with.


We pride ourselves on our excellent customer service and the quality of experience we provide, and we are dedicated to honest, fair and reasonable business practices. If you have a claim or complaint about your experience with us, please inform your guide or a Black Sheep representative as soon as possible so we can try to rectify the situation immediately or as soon as practicable. If you are on tour and satisfaction cannot be reached during your trip, please advise us of your complaint in writing (info@blacksheeptouring.co.nz) within 7 days of the end of your tour and we will do what we can to reach a satisfactory conclusion.


These Terms & Conditions and General Information are accurate at time of print. They are subject to change. We recommend checking on our website for the latest version prior to booking. The version of the Terms & Conditions and General Information active (ie on the website) at the time of your deposit is the version that will apply to your reservation.
